PAT Testing, London

Domestic Testing Services

Domestic dwellings often are neglected when it comes to electrical testing. We at Sol-Lux Electrical believe that it is of upmost importance to keep these electrical systems safe and compliant with current electrical regulations. Within a domestic dwelling there are three main areas of testing and they are split into the following tests:

  • EICR
  • Smoke Alarm Test
  • PAT Testing

These tests combined will assure the electrics within you home are safe to be used by your tenants, loved ones and yourself.

Electrical Inspection Condition Report (EICR)

All electrical installations, over time, will deteriorate naturally as they are a working mechanism made up of various components and working systems. Much like a MOT for cars it is important that you ensure you carry out checks on the condition of the electrics in your home at regular intervals. This will help identify any faults or defects which could require improvement and will ensure the continued operation of the installation in a safe and effective manner.

An EICR will consist of both visual and practical tests. The test will consist of testing at the fuse board/consumer unit and tests out in the field (sockets etc). Power will be lost for short periods of time during the test and various appliances may need to be disconnected or unplugged. The EICR Certificate will result in either a pass or a fail and will present findings as C Values (C1,C2,C3) and sometimes FI (Further Investigation). Each failing EICR carried out by our NICEIC approved electricians will be presented with images of the non-compliance’s and a quote will be issued alongside the report to meet a satisfactory standard.

Why might I need an EICR?

As a homeowner living within an owner-occupied property it is not law that an EICR is to be carried out within your property, However it is industry advised to have an EICR carried out every 10 years. If anything should go wrong electrically it is possible that your insurance company may ask for a copy of your report. Therefore, it is best to have one. We would advise that any homeowner without a report or expired report should book an EICR in with our team.

When Selling Your Home

Although this is not mandatory, potential buyers or your solicitor may ask for an electrical safety certificate to verify the safety of the property.

When Living Within Your Property

All homeowners are recommended to book electrical testing of their home every 10 years to ensure that installations are not deteriorating.

How we carry out our EICR’s

Here at Sol-Lux Electrical we believe that the current way our competitors and the industry as a whole perform EICR’s could be massively be improved. The electrical report itself should contain as much information as possible when it comes to the standard of the electrical installation, and our reports do just this. We believe that some installations require more attention than others, ‘mainly due to age’. We and have come up with a new method of evaluating in how much time should be taken and to what extent tests are carried out when testing each circuit. For example, for a property re-wired 10 years prior to the EICR you would generally expect the installation to be wired in new cabling, some form of RCD protection and accessible connections. Now let’s compare that to a property of 35 years, where you would expect old cabling with potentially low insulation readings, no RCD protection and also hidden junction boxes that could come loose and cause further problems. Upon contact with one of our office staff, they will ask you a series of questions to determine what level your property falls into and may request images of the property itself. We will then advise you of what level of test we feel appropriate and will leave the final decision to your discretion. You are free to opt for any EICR level you like as we feel this is the way the electrical industry needs to go when it comes to EICR’s.

Level 1

We recommend this EICR for properties that are being tested following a recently expired report or have been re-wired over the past 10 years and contain some form of RCD protection.

Level 2

We recommend this EICR for properties that are being tested with some form of RCD protection and wiring age at a maximum of 25 years of age.

Level 3

We recommend this EICR for properties that are being tested with no RCD protection and or wiring exceeds 25 years of age.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Domestic appliances become damaged or deteriorate over time. This increases the risk of shock. PAT testing helps to eliminate this risk as it is a series of tests designed to test the condition of your appliances within your home. Many safety defects in your appliances can be found through a visual inspection, however some faults will only become apparent through testing using specialist equipment.

We offer a great, efficient and thorough service of PAT testing in London for homeowners to not only ensure that they comply with health and safety standards but also for insurance purposes.

Domestic Smoke Alarm Inspection

A smoke alarm system is now a key part of every home and if you don’t have one installed we would highly recommend it, as it plays an integral part in your personal and home safety. A smoke alarm inspection is not required by law. However Sol-Lux Electrical and other Industry bodies and professionals believe that this unique system should be maintained. A fire alarm inspection will involve the following:

  • Dates checked and batteries tested
  • Are your heads interlinked (sound test)
  • Co-ordination of detector type with location
  • General condition of detector (is it covered with dust?)
  • Do you have detectors in the required locations?

Do you have an emergency? We offer 24/7 support.
